Ultra staccato tongue attacts, lots of vibrato (very wide and fast). Just searche youtube wtih "mariachi" that would bring a lot of material to listen.

Wen I think mariachi, I think staccato on the short notes, and legato volume swells on the longer notes...

Dut-dut-dut-dut-daaaAAAAAaaa triplet-DAH dut-dut triplet-doooOOOOooo

Seriously... go out to a Mexican restaurant, and just listen to the background music they have playing... seriously.

Also... pull your first slide out about 1/3 inch and use lots of vibrato. Of course the cold weather and playing while stomping your feet will achieve a similar lousy intonation and vibrato.

Come on now. Just as in any style of music there are those that do it well and those that are working on it. Here's a good example of some truly good mariachi trumpet playing by some of the premier players in the world.

That's just like asking who the top classical or jazz player is. Certainly, Mariachi Sol, Mariachi Vargas, Mariach Cobre are all among the better known mariachi groups. There are many, many other outstanding groups. I just did a search on YouTube earlier. Listen to all of the other videos from Mariachi Sol that show the recording session. Lots of good playing and singing there. My teacher makes me sing and strongly believes that some of the best trumpet players are good singers too.

NMex

NMex, your teacher is partly right. I would say ALL top instrumentalists are ALL good singers. I don't see how you can separate the two. A good ear will make good music no matter what the source of resonance is.

I see members of TH discuss many classical or jazz greats every day on this site and we all know who those trumpet players are. Just don't see anyone discussing mariachi trumpeters. I am sure there are great ones out there but I have never heard of any mariachi trumpet vituoso.

If you can name me perhaps the top 3 I would love to google them and youtube them.

Thanks some real deal trumpet playing!

I wish there was some more written music available for the Mariachi trumpet style.

I purchased a music minus one type product from www.latintrumpet.com and it was pretty good......but difficult to play along with.

There was someone selling like 100 tunes for $15 on Ebay......I picked those up to.

However to phrase this music correctly you need to play along with someone familiar with the style.......and the Mariachi guys are keeping it to themselves........

how about play on top of the beat or ahead of the beat, all vibrato is lip vibrato not hands and slightly on the sharp side rather than flat.

here's a good link with music.

Thanks NMEX!

Those are some nice charts.....just printed them out.

I read read a bit about Jeff Nevin.........looks like he is doing a great job of organizing Mariachi material.

I wouldn't exclude other instrumentalists either, we're just talking trumpet here right?

Joe,
Jose Hernandez is the leader of Mariachi Sol and is perhaps one of the better know mariachi players.

http://kanstul.com/pages/instruments/mariachi.html

The Tombstone site also refers to a couple of great players. and don't forget that Mendez played mariachi as a boy. You can hear the mariachi in his technique.

Just google "mariachi" and see what you find.

NMex

This one is of a very famous Mexican Singer, there is a trumpet solo in the middle:

As stated earlier there are great players in any style of music, and one has to be hummble because there are great players that are "hidden" and no much people know about them just because they dont care!!
